Product Review: Volume Hair Base

Product Review: Volume Hair Base
By Anna Chieng (Guest Blogger)

Approximately 90% of blogshops and reviewers, in my opinion, focus primarily on clothes, shoes, bags and accessories – all of which we wear/use to ‘add’ on to our appearances and to show off. I mean, literally ‘show’ as in for others to see.

So while we’ve all stocked up on these wear-for-others-to-see-type items, let us not forget those which enhance our appearances (as opposed to ‘add on to’), and show us off instead!

Like how apparel can complete us from head to toe, let me start on today’s topic of appearance-enhancing products with what’s on the head – hair! Which now brings me to something known as the Volume Hair Base!

Ta-daa!! *clap*clap*clap*

To put it as simply as I can, the Volume Hair Base is really just a hair volumizing insert made out of Velcro. As unsophisticated and straightforward as that may have sounded, one would have to wonder why no one ever thought of making a simple product like this until now! It comes in two sizes – one small and one large insert – and is said to be suitable for all hair types and colours.

The Super-Plus Points
  • The Volume Hair Base is small and portable, and unlike any other hair-volumizing-type products that I’ve come across so far, this one requires NO hairpins and NO hairsprays at all!
  • What’s so exciting about this is that I can literally carry this around in my handbag, and at any time I’m able to whip it out for an instant hairdo!
  • The Velcro and its little ‘claws’ are the technological wonders to thank for its amazing ability to stay in place.
  • Because of the abundant Velcro ‘claws’ which are able to latch onto the thousands of strands of hair, the Volume Hair Base is able to stay very firmly in place without the help of any hairpins and hairsprays, and backcombing and teasing are not required either!
  • Hence it’s fast and easy to use, and simply just does not fall off easily.
  • So no more fussy hairpins and hairsprays! The Volume Hair Base by itself will do the trick ;)

The Not-So-Super-Plus Points
  • Here’s where Dr Jekyll becomes Mr Hyde, and where the good point shows its bad side.
  • The Volume Hair Base’s ability to stay strongly and easily in place also implies that removing it can be a little tough!
  • And if you’re not satisfied with the positioning or placement of the Volume Hair Base, you might require a bit of time and effort to remove and reposition it. I guess this is the trade-off between the Volume Hair Base’s superb hold and ease of removing.
  • As its ability to stay in place depends on the Velcro’s ‘claws’ latching onto the strands of hair, it may also means that extremely smooth/fine/straight hair may not accord the Volume Hair Base as strong a grip as it otherwise would have (but this also means that removing it would be easier :P).
  • Lastly, while it does provide some volume, the degree of height it provides may not be as much as how some would prefer it to be. It’s really a ‘volume’ thing and not so much a ‘height’ thing. And by volume, this is what I mean:

…which is still pretty good!

All You Need To Remember
  • So, If I were to summarize the pros and cons of the Volume Hair Base into a single sentence, this is what it’ll be: It’s a volumizing insert (not a height insert) which has a really strong grip to ensure that it stays in place without pins and hairsprays, and thus is a bit difficult to remove. =P
  • Personally, I’d prefer something which is easier to put on and harder to remove, because I (and probably some of you girls out there too) almost never have enough time to get ready and pretty myself up! Rushing for a family dinner or even for classes is a normal occurrence for me, and the last thing I need is to rummage through my drawers for hair pins and attempt through trial and error, due to the limited number of hairpins that I’ll be able to find as well as the can of almost-finished hairspray, to solve my flat-hair problem.

So without further ado, let’s move on to…

Instructions to use Hair Volume Base
Here are the basic instructions as provided on Supermodel’s Secrets’ website:

And here are my detailed instructions/advices, based on my personal experience trying out the product :)
  • Step 1: Section out hair upwards across crown of the head into a half-do
  • Separate hair like how you would when doing a half do, but take a portion enough to cover up the Volume Hair Base. (Hereinafter, I shall refer to the half-do portion of the hair as ‘half-do hair’)

  • Step 2: Flip over the half-do hair to the front
  • This is to ensure that portions of the half-do hair will not get tangled in the Velcro when you’re putting the Volume Hair Base in place. If that happens, you might have to re-do step 1 again :( So taking that second to do this step could make your life a whole lot easier :P

  • Step 3: Place ‘Side A’ of the Volume Hair Base onto hair behind the parted line
  • It would be good to ensure that the Volume Hair Base is right in the middle before covering it up with the half-do hair. We wouldn’t want the bump to be slanted and coming out from the side of our heads now, do we? Say ‘NO’ to awkward hairdos! :P
  • Once you’ve placed the Volume Hair Base in the middle, press it down unto head with a bit of pressure and just shake it up and down on the same spot to allow the Velcro to better latch onto the hairs for a stronger hold.

  • Step 4: Put half-do hair down over the Volume Hair Base
  • Take your time to ensure that the Volume Hair Base is adequately covered up.
  • While this tool is quick and easy to use, you don’t have to use it like you’re in a ‘who-can-use-the-Volume-Hair-Base-fastest’ competition! (Unless you’d like to imagine yourself in one. I wouldn’t bet on the outcome though :P).
  • Taking your time to even out the details can safe you some embarrassment, and even then it still wouldn’t take more than 5 minutes!

  • Step 5: Say hello to more voluminous hair!

A-random-voice:What’s the difference between the Volume Hair Base and the Hair Bumpits?

Well, I’m glad you asked! Here’s the main difference: the Bumpits provides more height and volume but doesn’t hold well, while the Volume Hair Base holds extremely well but provides less volume.

Can’t decide which one’s better? Here’s my take: rather than seeing these two products as alternatives/competitors, why not see it as synergy waiting to happen? Have the best of both worlds and get more volume AND hold by using them both together!

Before / After ( = Bumpits + Volume Hair Base – hairpins & hairsprays)

One thing to note though, is that one has to be pretty gentle and careful when removing the Volume Hair Base. What I did was hold the product in place while I slowly pulled/slid the hairs out. It's almost like combing through the hairs, only that i'm moving the hairs instead of the 'comb'.

For additional instructions and ideas on how you may use the Volume Hair Base, check out the links to videos included below.
It’s currently priced at RM25 (inclusive of Pos Laju around Peninsular Malaysia) and RM20 for COD at USJ 2. But in addition to that, Supermodel’s Secrets is currently having a Raya Combo Deal to achieve two of the hairdos as shown in the videos!

Pretty good huh? :)

From Cleavage Control Bra Clips for enhanced bust to Magic 3D butt-padded panty for an instant sexy butt, and now for shapely and fabulous hair with this Volume Hair Base! There’s no saying what we’re gonna see enhanced next ;P

Jessyca> hi Jessyca! thanks for your enquiry. Technically you can, however we advise customers to hand wash this item as machine wash may cause it to attach to your other laundry.

cheers,
Michelle
