Product Review: Easy Hair Bun

Product Review: Japanese Bun Sponge Baby
From: My Pandora Box
Price: RM15

Question for the ladies: What's the easiest hairstyle to pull off? Second only to the ponytail, the hair bun is unrivalled in its versatility - you can whip up a bun when you're summoned for casual lunches, formal dinners, or when you need to operate heavy machinery.

I don't know about you, but I sure find it very difficult to style my hair in any other ways than (1) tying it up into a ponytail and (2) just leaving it messy and uncombed. Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon this Hair Sponge a.k.a. Easy Hair Bun from My Pandora Box! I knew I had to get it - for the sake of the bored people who have to stand behind me in the nasi lemak queue in the campus cafeteria, and for the sake of every reader reading this who is stuck in the same hair rut as me :D

RM15 (plus RM3 Pos Ekspres) later, the black hair sponge arrived in my postbox :D It's also available in dark brown for those of you who have dyed your hair brown :) Best to get the colour that matches your hair colour the most - this is meant to be invisible!

It has a very bendable wire inside, so it's extremely easy to use! :) It also doesn't lose its shape. This is what your hair bun will ultimately look like:

Follow These Easy Instructions
  1. Tie your hair into a ponytail. High ponytail recommended! I did a low ponytail anyway, so you can see what it looks like below :P
  2. Place ponytail into hair sponge.
  3. Tighten hair sponge and pull down to perhaps the last quarter of your ponytail.
  4. Start rolling the hair sponge up towards the top of your head.
  5. Bend the ends of the hair sponge down to secure bun.
  6. Move your hair so it covers the sponge.
  7. Bobby pin the loose strands in, give it a puff of hairspray (optional) and you're all set! Decorate with hair accessories (such as flowers or hairbands) if you like :)

Is it really that easy?
  • At first, I was skeptical - but then I followed the instructions, and it really IS that easy! :D
  • If you want it to look neater and sleeker, you'll have to use bobby pins to secure the wild bits - and to use hair moisturizer. Hairspray helps to keep the bun in place if you're going out for a special occasion ;)
  • If you want the bun higher on your head, just tie your ponytail higher. As you can see in the video (below), you can even tie your ponytail on the side of your head - anywhere you want, your hair bun can be! :D As you can see, I've tied my ponytail low, so the resulting bun is low :)
  • It takes, like, 10 seconds for the basic bun. Totally worth the RM15!
Photos as proof - pardon my jammies :P

Videos *Must Watch!*
  • This first video is recommended by My Pandora Box, which shows very clearly how to use the hair sponge. However, I personally couldn't use it this way because my hair is too thick and layered (so I used the method of the second video below). If you have thin hair that is not layered, you can even use the hair sponge without needing to tie a ponytail! :)
  • Watch this video (by a famous Hong Kong vlogger) on how to use this hair bun sponge :D It's in spoken Cantonese but there are English subtitles for instructions - and you can still see how she is using the hair sponge, no worries! :) You only need to watch the first 3 minutes to get all the info you need :D You'll be very impressed with the results, trust me! ;)

Happy Shopping!

You're right, the second video is more helpful for layered hair but the translation is really bad XD

Hi Joey - haha really? LOL! I'm not so fluent in Cantonese so I can't spot the mistakes! Haha! But the front part was funny, when she got her Indian friend to speak Canto, hahahaha~

Hi Christine - oh gosh, I'm so sorry for the mistake! I've corrected it! :D Thanks dear!
