Product Review: Konjac Cleansing Sponge

By Cynthia (Guest Blogger)

Asia has done it again! First, there was BB cream. Then, there were all sorts of awesome blackhead-battling masks. And now, there's the Konjac Cleansing Sponge! The craze is on, and we just had to test this new popular product out for you guys. ;)

Available from: Styles4u | Price: RM30 RM23
Well, it is a facial sponge =D The Konjac Care Face Cleansing Jelly Sponge made from the Konjac plant, widely found in Japan, is 100% natural, colouring and additive free, biodegradable and environmentally safe.

The sponge comes in sealed damp bag and is soft when pressed on. Unlike our normal facial sponge which requires it to be soaked, this one comes in a moist packaging and is ready for use immediately. At the first sight of this black lil' sponge, I was pretty worried that it may squirt out squid ink when pressed hehe!

The sponge in a damp packaging and look at the texture!
Like some charcoal-burnt cookie :3

This revolutionary sponge claims to be able to clean your skin with the presence of natural alkaline in the konjac ingredient. You don't really need to lather with facial foam. The texture looks coarse, but it's actually soft to the touch with a slight rough surface for the purpose of exfoliation. The konjac fiber is originally white in color, and this lil' black piece I had is one with charcoal, which is another element suitable for those with sensitive or acne prone skin.

How I Use It
  • I like that the sponge comes attached with a tiny string for you to hang anywhere in the shower. As it comes in a damp condition, I reckon it doesn't require to be hung at dry area. That's what I normally do when I use the normal facial sponge - to peg it on the window and air dry it, so that it will not turn mouldy ;(
  • The konjac is meant to be damp and the ability to soak in water in that small little hemisphere ball is amazing! Though it can be used alone, I prefer to use it with some facial cleanser of exfoliating gel when washing my face off make up. In between the days when I do need to freshen up the face, I normally use it as it is.

How I Find The Product
It provides gentle exfoliation and does not irritate my skin so far. No redness after the scrubbing. It's also great that it's in such a shape and it means that it's easily to navigate on areas like the side of the nose and around the corner of the eyes.

  • By now, it's been a week that I have used the sponge. The face does feel supple and plumped up after every wash. It's like a massage session for the face! Naturally, it feels softer too after the using the natural sponge. It's like rubbing vegetable fiber on the face!
  • After every wash, I would normally slap on some hydrating serum or light moisturiser, just in case I washed way too long and dries up the skin. I am currently trying the Skincology Hydrating Serum for that hydration need. Review of that will be up soon!

Is it worth buying?
If you have always been looking for it, now you can have a try at this wonderful konjac sponge at a discounted price of RM23 only in Styles4u, which is an online platform that sells a variety of Korean and Taiwanese beauty products that may not be easily accessible on the retail counter. If you are a fan of Missha range of skincare and beauty products, this is the place to go! They have a pretty wide range of beauty solution from the Missha brand, Skin79, and latest addition to their range - Skincology, which houses a pretty affordable line which is quite a popular brand in Taiwan.
